Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
