Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own problems can be addressed in rehab.
