Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
