Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be beneficial in circumstances where standard rehabilitation facilities have fallen short, such as coping with situations in a women's life that are unique and distressing. Such difficulties may have to do with sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and motherhood, and other significant issues that are particular to women. Research has revealed that women also can become involved in abusing drugs more readily than men, and so are more vulnerable to sickness as a result of drug abuse problems than males as a result. Due to responsibilities in the home, women also tend to postpone seeking out and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can lead to disaster. With this in mind, rehabilitation services for women are designed so that a women's needs will be the concentration and priority. Just like coed centers, drug and alcohol treatment centers which provide treatment services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a starting point. After this step, professionals help women concentrate on both basic and gender-specific issues which may have triggered their drug or alcohol use. Women also utilize the constructive support from other female peers, and a few centers which offer rehab services to women provide client beds for their children.
