Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
