Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
