Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be treated in treatment.
