Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
