Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
