Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody so that their own personal problems can be addressed in treatment.
