Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
