Offering gender-specific rehab services has proven beneficial in situations where standard rehabilitation facilities have not meet expectations, like coping with situations in the women's life that are unique and traumatic. Such difficulties may have to do with sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and being a mother, or other serious issues which are specific to women. Research has shown that women could also get involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and are more predisposed to illness because of drug abuse issues than males as a result. Due to obligations in the home, women also tend to put off looking for and receiving care for addiction, a circumstance which can be a catalyst for disaster. That said, treatment services for women are designed in order that a women's needs would be the concentration and priority. Similar to coed programs, alcohol and drug treatment programs which offer treatment services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women give attention to both general and gender specific issues which may have triggered their drug or alcohol use. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from their female peers, and several centers which offer rehab services to women provide client beds for their young children.
