Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual so that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
