Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
