Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each individual so that their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
