Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol.
