Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody so that their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
