Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs.
