Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own personal problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
