Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
