In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each individual so that their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
