Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person so that their own challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
