Sadly, it's true that tens of millions of people actually choose to operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Doing this not simply puts one's life at risk and puts passengers in danger as well, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually bring about severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and even prison time. Often times somebody who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying drug abuse issue. A legal court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug rehabilitation rather than other severe penalties because of their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug rehabilitation as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other consequences of the crime, but can decrease the severity of such consequences to a great extent. Particularly if the person willingly takes part in drug treatment and is also a first-time offender. Research indicates that a large proportion of people who do receive alcohol and drug rehab for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the court system for similar charges in the future.
