Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be handled in treatment.
