Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
