Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
