Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
