Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person so that their own problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
