Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
