Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person so that their particular challenges can be treated in rehab.
