Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
