Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
