Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their own challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
