Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
