Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure their unique problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
