Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their particular problems can be handled in treatment.
