Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
