Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique problems can be treated in treatment.
