Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure their unique problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
