Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual so that their particular challenges can be addressed in rehab.
