Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person so that their unique problems can be addressed in rehab.
