Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their unique problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
