Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol.
