Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
