Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
