Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
