Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
