Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
