Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be remedied in treatment.
