Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal challenges can be treated in treatment.
